CLOTTING FACTOR
Overview
BeneFix is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to control and prevent bleeding episodes in children and adults with hemophilia B. BeneFix can also be used for perioperative (before, during, and after surgery) care. The technical name of BeneFix is Coagulation factor IX (recombinant).
BeneFix is a clotting factor. Clotting factors work by supplying proteins missing in people with hemophilia.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that BeneFix is given as an intravenous injection.
BeneFix comes as a powder that must be reconstituted before injection.
Side effects
The FDA-approved label for BeneFix lists common side effects including nausea, headache, dizziness, rash, and pain or irritation at the injection site.
Rare but serious side effects listed for BeneFix include kidney problems, thromboembolic events, systemic allergic reactions, and the development of inhibitors.
